Sund & Bælt have commisioned a new transport model. The purpose of the model is to be able to create a price and discount structure for both the upcoming Fehmarn connection and Sund & Bælt’s other connections (the Great Belt and Øresund connections) and possibly future connections across the Kattegat, Øresund and between Als and Funen.

Collaboration with COWI
The new transport model is to be developed by the Dutch consultancy Significance, which has won the consultancy contract following a tender. Significance will prepare the transport model together with COWI.

The transport model will focus on transport demand in the relationship between traffic, prices and income, changes in destination and choice of transport mode. The model will include both passenger and freight traffic.

Focus on demand
The transport model will focus on demand as traffic growth and distribution of traffic on different connections and alternatives to Sund & Bælt, such as ferry traffic. Therefore, the model will also have more focus on long-distance trips and, for example, leisure trips than most other transport models. Traffic must therefore be reported in annual figures. Sund & Bælt’s transport model will, when necessary, work together with the Danish national transport model to arrive at the right level of service.

Two steps
The new transport model will be developed in two stages. The first stage covers the Great Belt link and the Øresund link and is based on existing data. The second step reconfirms both existing, planned and potential connections.

The new transport model is expected to be completed in two years. The data collection will start in the near future and will be completed this year.

Contract for DKK 9.5 million
The contract for the new transport model was tendered for DKK 9.5 million.

– It is one of the bigger projects for us. But it is very well within our scope. We have previously prepared similar models here in the Netherlands, and now we are looking forward to getting started with collecting data in Denmark, says Barry Zondag, director of Significance.
