The Fehmarn project received an exceptionally distinguished guest on Monday afternoon when His Majesty King Frederik X visited Rødbyhavn for the official inauguration of the first of the 79 standard elements for the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel. The inauguration took place as King Frederik, along with Sund & Bælt’s director, Mikkel Hemmingsen, unveiled a commemorative plaque that was set up at the mouth of the very first completed tunnel element for the occasion.
The King donated a tenner
Along with the commemorative plaque, a time capsule was also set up, to which the many attendees could also contribute. The royal contribution to the time capsule was a silver ten-krone coin, issued in connection with King Frederik X’s 18th birthday in 1986.
Before the official inauguration, there were speeches by Mikkel Hemmingsen from Sund & Bælt, Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen (Venstre), and process operator apprentice Andreas Madsen from FLC. Before heading out to the 217-meter-long and 42-meter-wide tunnel element, His Majesty received a quick briefing and tour at Femern A/S’s visitor center in Rødbyhavn.
