The company Global Tunneling Experts (GTE) is now determined to supply manpower with expertise in tunnel construction to the Fehmarn project.
GTE is a recruitment agency with headquarters in the Netherlands and offices in a total of eight countries. Including Denmark, where the company has an office in Fjenneslev by Sorø and now also office space in Rødbyhavn.
GTE specializes in providing skilled manpower ranging from earth and concrete, electricians, blacksmiths, hydraulic mechanics to tunneling and construction specialists.
– Right now we have projects all over the world, but none right now in Denmark, so we really want to be part of the Fehmarn project. Because even if it is not a drilled tunnel, our crew has expertise that is needed on the Fehmarn project, says Merete Jensen, who is responsible for Fehmarn at GTE.
Wide range of skills
Many of the projects GTE is involved in are drilled tunnels and other large construction projects, where the agency has also supplied manpower for the construction of the metro in Copenhagen.
But the agency’s workforce, which numbers around 400, has a wide range of competences within tunnel construction, which can contribute to, for example, the establishment of factory facilities and tunnel portals, the production of tunnel elements and the work with the electrical and mechanical innards of the tunnel itself, points out Merete Jensen.
– Among other things, we can solve electronic tasks in the tunnel. But ironbinders and blacksmiths are also needed. We have a huge manpower catalog from which we can select the manpower that is relevant in connection with the Fehmarn project, explains Merete Jensen.
GTE supplies both entire shift teams and individual employees to supplement an already existing workforce.
GTE is a subsidiary of German Herrenknecht AG, which is the market leader in equipment for tunnel construction. The group has 70 subsidiaries and associated companies worldwide.
Trained in Germany
In 2022, Herrenknecht AG had orders for approximately DKK 10 billion, so it is a major player in infrastructure that GTE has behind it.
– If someone wants to work for us, they are sent to Herrenknecht’s factory in Schwanau, Germany, where they are trained in tunnel boring machines. When we have a project in, for example, North America or Denmark, we ask them if it is interesting for them, and then we otherwise take care of everything such as salary papers, visa applications, work permits and accommodation, explains Merete Jensen.
She is present in Rødbyhavn from the office space at FB Suppliers, from where she will expand her network.
– We must be visible and tell what we can do, because there are many people in Denmark who do not know us, says Merete Jensen.
There are quite a few recruitment agencies. How does GTE differ?
– We differentiate ourselves by having broad competences within large construction projects. We have experienced personnel who have been involved for many years on many large projects, says Merete Jensen.
185 projects in six years
In addition to the metro construction in Copenhagen, GTE has also been involved in the project to establish the Damhusledningen in Copenhagen.
Abroad, GTE has been involved in several projects. From 2014 to 2019 alone, GTE was involved in 185 projects in 42 countries worldwide.
Among other things, we can mention an extension of the metro in Paris from 2018-2020, the establishment of one of the world’s largest potash mines, the Jansen mine in Canada 2012-2019, and the establishment of a 57.7 kilometer long railway line between Mexico City and Toluca from 2016- 2019.
