Special Waste System A/S in Nørre Alslev ended 2024 with a profit of 16.1 million kroner. This is a significant improvement compared to the previous year, where the company had a profit of 0.8 million kroner.
The result is largely due to compensation the company received following an explosion fire in May 2023. An explosion at that time destroyed the company's incineration plant for hazardous waste. Large parts of the furnace hall and adjacent buildings were also affected. Compensation for loss of operations and damaged equipment alone amounted to nearly 28 million kroner. Without these revenues, the year's profit would have been significantly smaller.
Since then, Special Waste System has received coverage from insurance and is now working to obtain permits to rebuild a new and improved facility. Approvals from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Danish Energy Agency, and Guldborgsund Municipality are still pending. Therefore, reconstruction has not yet begun.
Investigated by the police
In the meantime, hazardous waste is handled by sending it to other approved facilities. Other business areas, such as the sale of packaging and handling of flue gas cleaning products, continue as before.
The accounts also include a provisioned expense of 2.5 million kroner for cleaning up pollution, including in the slag yard. Management considers the amount sufficient but emphasises that there is uncertainty associated with the assessment.
After the end of the financial year, the company has also been reported to the police. According to management, it concerns a former trusted employee who, from 2014 to 2023, reported 27 incorrect emission values. The case is now being investigated both internally and by the police and concerns possible violations of the Environmental Protection Act and the Penal Code.
