Tunnel toll could be higher than previously expected

The previous estimate of EUR 60 for a trip through the Fehmarn tunnel is no longer considered realistic.

A trip through the Fehmarn tunnel could become more expensive than previously expected.

The price of a single crossing has previously been estimated at around EUR 60, equivalent to approximately DKK 450. That figure is no longer realistic, Lars Friis Cornett, Germany Director at Femern A/S, tells the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

He does not put a figure on what a crossing is now expected to cost, as the final price will not be set by Femern A/S.

- It is a political decision, Lars Friis Cornett tells the newspaper.

Denmark is financing the tunnel itself, and the loans are intended to be repaid through charges paid by cars, lorries and trains using the link.

Denmark therefore also has a clear financial interest in getting the tunnel open so that revenue can start coming in.

The previous estimate of EUR 60 is roughly in line with the current standard fare for a ferry crossing between Rødby and Puttgarden. A higher tunnel toll could therefore potentially affect competition with Scandlines and the routes chosen by transport companies.

It remains unclear when the tunnel will open. Denmark and Germany are expected to make a joint announcement on the revised timetable within the coming weeks.
