The price of a trip through the Fehmarn tunnel remains undecided. The EUR 60, or around DKK 450, used in previous calculations was never fixed as the final charge for motorists, Sund & Bælt tells FemernBusiness.
- The figure was a technical price assumption used at the time to calculate the economics of the project. The actual price for using the Fehmarn Belt tunnel will be decided by the Minister for Transport before the tunnel opens, Sund & Bælt says in a written response.
The clarification comes after Lars Friis Cornett, Germany Director at Femern A/S, confirmed to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the previously cited EUR 60 figure is probably no longer realistic.
Sund & Bælt expects the link to have several different prices and discount schemes, similar to those already used on the Great Belt and Øresund links. These could, for example, apply to commuters and same-day return trips.
The loans for the link are to be repaid over time through revenue from traffic. Delays and any additional costs are included in the ongoing financial assessments, while the favourable interest rates on the project’s loans strengthen the economics, according to Sund & Bælt.
The company therefore maintains that the link can still be financed through user charges as envisaged in the Construction Act.
