Nordic Sugar to end sugar production in Nakskov

Nordzucker, the owner of Nordic Sugar, will end sugar production in Nakskov after the 2026/2027 sugar beet campaign.

The factory will instead continue as a packaging and distribution centre for sugar, the company said on Tuesday.

Up to 150 jobs are expected to be affected when this year’s beet campaign ends in January 2027.

According to Nordzucker, the decision is due in part to overcapacity in the European sugar industry and the fact that the Nakskov factory would require greater investment than the group’s other production sites.

- We have reached the difficult conclusion that we no longer see a viable future for sugar production in Nakskov, says Lars Gorissen, CEO of Nordzucker Group.

Nordic Sugar will now enter into talks with, among others, Lolland Municipality, trade unions and employee representatives.

Sugar production in Denmark will continue at the factory in Nykøbing Falster, where Nordzucker will in future consolidate its Danish production.
