Mayor wants clarity on power supply for data centre

The electricity supply is the biggest challenge facing the data centre plans near Nørre Alslev.

A large data centre near Nørre Alslev will require significant amounts of electricity. But how and when the necessary capacity can be delivered is still unclear.

That is according to Guldborgsund Mayor Simon Hansen, after the municipality requested a hearing before the Danish Parliament’s Climate, Energy and Utilities Committee about the project’s power supply.

- The biggest challenge right now is the grid connection. Energinet needs to clarify how and when the necessary capacity can be delivered, and we are in close dialogue with both Energinet and the state about this, he says in a written response to FemernBusiness.

The project is being developed by German company GARBE Data Centers, which plans a data centre on a 35-hectare site with an expected power requirement of up to 350 MW.

The municipality will not say whether the investor has set a deadline for clarification. But the mayor makes it clear that an answer is needed.

- We do not comment on our dialogue with the investor. But it is clear that an investment of this size requires clarity on the power supply – and the sooner, the better.

It is also still open which solution could move the project forward. Asked about direct power connections or private financing, Simon Hansen says:

- We are open to looking at the models that could move the project forward, but it is too early to point to one specific solution.
