The new timeframe for the Fehmarn Sound tunnel has drawn sharp criticism from IHK Lübeck, the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
- The further delay in the construction of the new Fehmarn Sound tunnel is regrettable and incomprehensible, the chamber writes in a response to FemernBusiness.
The tunnel is intended to carry cars and trains from Fehmarn to the German mainland after they have passed through the Fehmarn Belt tunnel. But a new German plan now puts the opening at no later than 2035, compared with the previous expectation of 2031/2032.
According to IHK Lübeck, the full potential of the Fehmarn link can only be realised once the road and rail connections on the German side are also ready to handle the traffic.
The delays therefore prolong uncertainty for businesses and postpone the opportunities associated with a better connection to Scandinavia. A reliable timetable is particularly important for the logistics sector and for companies with close economic ties to Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia, the chamber stresses.
IHK Lübeck is therefore making a clear demand of the federal government in Berlin.
- We therefore expect the German government to give the planning, approval and implementation of the hinterland connections the highest priority and to present a robust timetable. Rather than further delays, the business community now needs planning certainty and reliability.
