The planned data centre in Business Park Falster already has an approved local development plan. But before the project can become a reality, its power supply and grid connection must be clarified.
Guldborgsund Municipality is therefore requesting a hearing before the Danish Parliament’s Climate, Energy and Utilities Committee. According to the municipality, the project could involve an investment of around DKK 20 billion and has the potential to create 300 permanent jobs.
In the letter, Mayor Simon Hansen points out that in 2023, Lolland-Falster produced more than four times the region’s annual electricity consumption from solar and wind power. The municipality wants more of that electricity to be used locally and converted into investment and jobs.
The municipality wants to discuss how the state, grid companies and private investors can clarify the project’s power supply in time. Among the options mentioned are direct power connections and private co-financing of transformer and grid infrastructure.
The clarification is also important for district heating. According to the letter, Guldborgsund Forsyning has expressed interest in using surplus heat from the data centre to supply around 7,000 heating customers in the first phase.
Together with other heat sources, storage and reserve capacity, the surplus heat could form part of a transition of the area’s district heating system, which is currently based on waste incineration.
