The demand for train travel to Germany is on the rise, and therefore DSB plans to double an order with the Spanish train manufacturer Talgo for the supply of passenger cars to be used for train travel to and from Hamburg, according to Ingeniøren.
In 2020, DSB ordered eight carriages, each with space for 492 passengers, to run on the international routes between Hamburg and Copenhagen and Aarhus, respectively.
Exercising option of eight more
Now DSB will use an option in the contract so that the capacity in the future will be twice as large.
– The plan is for us to buy another eight wagons so that we can double the international traffic, which is in huge demand at the moment and will increase further in the future when the Fehmarn link opens at the end of the decade, says Jürgen Müller , Director of Strategy & Rolling Stock at DSB.
Delivered from next summer
DSB expects the first rolling stock from Talgo to be delivered continuously from the summer of 2024 and the following years.
The supplementary order has not yet been finally approved. The agreement with Talgo will be signed next week, and then an appeal period must be completed before the purchase can be presented to DSB’s board of directors and the Danish Parliament.
DSB refuses to disclose the value of the new order.
Powered by electric locomotives
The passenger cars from Talgo will be propelled by electric locomotives of the Vectron model from Siemens, which DSB has already received.
The new Vectron will be put into operation this summer between Copenhagen and Hamburg, but with IC1 carriages from the 1980s, which DSB has leased from Deutsche Bahn, until the passenger carriages from Talgo are delivered.
Aarhus-Hamburg will not be electrified until 2026
Travelers on the Aarhus-Hamburg route will have to wait a little longer to ride an electric train.
This is because catenaries have not yet been installed on the railway line north of Fredericia. That work is expected to be completed in 2026.
