Today, Sund & Bælt is releasing a new podcast series titled *The Story of the Fehmarn Belt Link*. Over the course of five episodes, listeners will have the chance to meet some of the thousands of people working to build a permanent tunnel link between Denmark and Germany.
The podcast not only explores the practical challenges of constructing the world’s longest immersed tunnel at 18 kilometers but also delves into the historical and cultural roots of the project. The vision of a link across the Fehmarn Belt can actually be traced all the way back to the Stone Age. Over the years, the idea has been dreamed up, debated, and developed by politicians and engineers. Now, that dream is becoming a reality – and you can get a unique insight into the process.
A look behind the fence
Jens Villemoes, press officer at Sund & Bælt, explains that interest in the Fehmarn project is immense:
– With this podcast, we want to give listeners the opportunity to get up close to daily life behind the construction fence and the many thousands of people who work every day to make the tunnel a reality, says Jens Villemoes in a press release.
The Story of the Fehmarn Belt Link dives into the technical complexity of constructing the immersed tunnel, where 79 elements, each 217 meters long, are assembled under the seabed. It also highlights the extensive work involved in integrating the project into the natural environment. Listeners will get to visit the tunnel town and go on night walks in the surrounding natural areas created as part of the project.
Experts, apprentices, and bus drivers
Each episode features meetings with the many people contributing to the project. Insights are provided into everything from biologists’ efforts to protect local fauna to engineers’ struggles with technical challenges and neighbors’ experiences of the massive construction site. Additionally, apprentices, bus drivers, and experts in megaprojects are introduced, all playing crucial roles in the construction.
The first episode is already available, with new episodes being released every Tuesday until December 3.
