On Thursday, Femern A/S and Elecnor signed the contract for the Spanish contractor to be responsible for the construction of the transformer station that will supply power to the tunnel’s installations and running current to the trains.
100,000 mWh per year
As FemernReport has recently described, the transformer station will be one of Denmark’s largest, and when it is finished it will be able to deliver over 100,000 mWh per year – equivalent to the annual consumption of over 22,000 households. The contract has a value of just over 40 million euros.
Spanish cartel case haunts
Spanish Elecnor, which ran with the contract, is involved in a major cartel case in its home country, which is still awaiting its decision at the court. Also Grupo Cobra, which will be responsible for the technical installations in the tunnel as part of Femern Technical Contractors (FTC) together with also Spanish SICE, is involved in the same case.
Also charging stations for electric cars
Elecnor has extensive experience with similar tasks across Europe. In the contract, Elecnor has committed to high energy efficiency and, furthermore, the substation will have the capacity to serve future electric forms of transport, including charging stations for electric vehicles.
A milestone
– This is yet another milestone for the construction of the Fehmarnbelt connection with today’s signing of the contract. We are very much looking forward to the collaboration with Elecnor on the important task of making the tunnel ready for CO2-neutral operation when we open in 2029, says Jens Ole Kaslund, technical director of Femern A/S.
Work on the substation will begin in 2023.
