Six Concrete Proposals: Unlocking the Potential of the Fehmarn Region

The Danish-German border. Kruså. The heated debate about permanent border control is developing day by day in the direction of a diplomatic crisis between Denmark and Germany. The matter has now grown so big that it is damaging our reputation abroad and thus the business life here at home, writes Information on Thursday. The concerns come, among other things from Dansk Industri, one of the absolute heavyweights of the business world, who are seriously afraid that the controversial border control will damage Denmark's image. When the Fehmarn connection opens in 2029, travel time between Scandinavia and Central Europe will be significantly reduced, creating a new transport corridor that ties the regions closer together. According to a new report from the Fehmarn Business Council, composed of business organizations from Denmark, Northern Germany, and Southern Sweden, both Danish and German businesses are expected to benefit greatly from an expanded recruitment area and improved access to knowledge and expertise.

The report presents six concrete initiatives to strengthen collaboration and mobility between Denmark and Germany when the Fehmarn connection becomes operational. The focus is on creating a dynamic growth region with fewer cross-border barriers and greater economic integration.

Fehmarn Direct – A Unified Digital Platform
A digital service providing centralized access to practical information for cross-border commuters. The platform will assist citizens and businesses with everything from job portals to tax matters across the border.

Dialogue Forum for Authorities
A forum bringing together Danish and German municipalities and regions to coordinate cross-border initiatives and address shared challenges such as legislation and labor mobility.

Cross-Border Legislation Review
A proposal to screen all new laws to ensure they do not create unnecessary administrative burdens for cross-border commuters and businesses.

Regulatory Sandboxes
Controlled trials of new regulations in the border area, allowing businesses and authorities to collaboratively test and adapt rules to promote mobility and trade.

Harmonization of Remote Work Regulations
A solution to challenges related to taxes and social benefits arising from working across borders, especially as remote work becomes more common.

International Citizen Service (ICS) in South Zealand
A service center aimed at simplifying paperwork and helping international employees settle into the region. This initiative is also designed to attract global talent to the area.
