On Monday, the climate, technology and environment committee in Lolland Municipality will decide on a new strategy and master plan for Lolland’s business ports. Here, the element factory’s working port will play a key role as one of the three commercial ports to be invested in until 2050. The other two are the port in Nakskov and the traffic port in Rødbyhavn.

From traffic to tourist port
From the strategy, it appears that the traffic port in Rødbyhavn must focus on maritime tourism to a greater extent in the future. The water depth of a modest five metres, few harbor areas on land and a relatively small harbor basin limit the possibilities of using the inner harbor as a commercial port in the future. On the other hand, the increasing tourism activity and the increasing need for accommodation capacity provide good opportunities for the traffic port in Rødbyhavn as a future tourist and experience port on Lolland’s South Coast.

The working port becomes a commercial port
Lolland Municipality expects that it will take a few more years before the operation and ownership of the element factory’s working harbor is finally settled. But by that time, the working port will have good opportunities as a future business port.

“The location and the area’s infrastructure with railway, motorway and port are unique. With its location and its considerable areas, rear areas, buildings and harbor facilities, the working harbor has good prerequisites to become a good supplement to Nakskov Harbour. It will be able to contribute to permanent jobs in Lolland, for example based on concrete skills and the construction facilities,” states the outline for the new strategy and master plan for Lolland’s business ports.

Three goals for the working port
There are three overall goals for the port at the element factory: To secure the framework for permanent industry and jobs, to retain good companies from the tunnel project in the area and to attract new companies with a location in the middle of the corridor from Germany to Scandinavia.

Lolland Municipality has already started idea generation and interest management in connection with the working harbor together with an external adviser.
