“With these kinds of opponents, you don’t need friends.” It could be an appropriate paraphrase of an old saying in connection with the recent detonation of an old deep-water bomb in the Fehmarn Belt.

Surprising praise from NABU
One of the most outspoken opponents of the Fehmarn connection, the German environmental organization NABU (Naturschutzbund Deutschland), praises Fehmarn A/S on Twitter.

The surprising praise from the opponent comes because Femern A/S took into account the wildlife in the area in connection with the blasting on 17 October. Among other things, a so-called double bubble curtain was used to minimize the noise. Various acoustic means were also used to soundly scare marine mammals, such as seals and porpoises, away from the blast. And it went down well with both animals and NABU:

Femern A/S has delivered
– NABU had demanded the best possible protection measures for, for example, harbour porpoises. Femern A/S has delivered and set a new standard, writes NABU on Twitter.

It’s not every day that NABU praises Femern A/S, and when FemernReport calls to hear more, press spokeswoman Silvia Teich also reacts with some astonishment:

Surprised spokeswoman
– It surprises me as much as you, she says.

But after checking with NABU’s marine protection experts, she finds that it is actually correct:

– Fehmarn has set a new and good standard here, which they were pressured to do by NABU. But they kept their word and carried it out. We can only assess that positively. However, that does not prevent us from sticking to our line elsewhere, says spokeswoman Silvia Teich from NABU.

The reef case will be decided in December
That line will be continued, for example, on 7 December, when a decision is expected in a case about protected reefs near the tunnel course in Fehmarn Belt. With almost one million members, NABU is Germany’s largest environmental and nature organization. It is also the oldest, with over 100 years behind it.
