Back in 2023, Vestas completed the construction of wind turbines with a total capacity of 114 megawatts near Mykolajiv in Ukraine.
Now, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer is set to once again erect towers and install turbines in Ukraine.
Vestas is part of an agreement to build 64 wind turbines near the first Tyligulska wind farm.
The new turbines will increase the capacity from the previous 114 megawatts to nearly 500 megawatts. This means that in the future, an additional 700,000 households will be supplied with electricity.
According to Vestas, it will be the largest wind energy project in the country. The wind turbines will not be built in Nakskov, where only offshore wind turbines are produced.
Value of four billion
The agreement is made with the Ukrainian energy company DTEK and has been facilitated by a state guarantee of 2.85 million kroner from the Danish Ukraine Fund, which is administered by Denmark's Export and Investment Fund.
According to the Ministry of Industry, it is a project with a total value of four billion kroner.
In addition to the order for the 64 wind turbines, the agreement also includes a service contract that runs for 20 years.
The construction of the 64 wind turbines will begin as early as the first quarter of this year, and they are expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
Ukraine is in dire need of the wind turbines due to frequent Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
- Today's agreement is a big step towards a new energy future in Ukraine.
- From having a system that is daily threatened by attacks, we are building a resilient and secure energy infrastructure that also helps Ukraine deliver on its climate commitments, says Maxim Timtjenko, who is the CEO of DTEK.
According to the CEO of the Export and Investment Fund, Peder Lundquist, the project is the 15th in a series that the fund is helping to finance in Ukraine.
In addition to energy, the projects also cover sectors such as water supply and agriculture.
