Vestas has received permission to construct a new tent hall at its factory in Nakskov. The hall will be 5,700 square metres in size and will be used for grinding and painting wind turbine blades - and later as a buffer for completion and repair.
The permission has been granted by Lolland Municipality, even though the final environmental approval is not yet in place. The municipality has assessed that the project can be accommodated within the current environmental requirements, and has therefore allowed construction to start immediately - at Vestas' own risk.
“This is not new production, but a temporary relocation of certain work processes to a separate hall,” the decision states.
However, the actual operation may only begin once the necessary supplement to the environmental approval has been granted.
No significant environmental impact
An EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) screening concludes that the hall does not require an actual environmental assessment. No process water will be used, and emissions from painting and grinding are kept below the current limit values. Transport of blades will take place with special vehicles during daytime and is expected to involve 1-2 units per week.
The area where the hall is being constructed is already in an industrial area with a long industrial history. The risk of pollution from old landfill activities is managed with a membrane and drainage under the building, and the municipality has approved the associated soil management plan.
Supports existing production
The tent hall will be used in continuation of the existing production of wind turbine blades in Nakskov. Here, Vestas manufactures, among other things, blades for the offshore projects Baltic Power in Poland and He Dreiht in Germany.
According to Vestas' annual report for 2024, Nakskov is one of two factories supplying blades for these large offshore wind projects. The production is thus part of a larger European effort to expand green offshore electricity - and the tent hall will ensure flexibility and capacity during a period of high pace.
A local piece in a major venture
The factory in Nakskov has been an important production site for Vestas since 1999. With the new tent hall, capacity is expanded without increasing production. The municipality assesses that the project can be carried out with low environmental impact and in line with the existing plans for the area.
The hall is scheduled to be ready for use during 2025.
