Once a month, Femern A/S’ top management and a number of the developer’s other key people meet. At the meeting, the circumstances that can delay, increase the cost or completely halt the world’s longest immersed tunnel from being a success are discussed.

There are always risks
The people around the meeting table make up Femern A/S’s risk committee. The man who must be able to answer the questions from the other participants is Bo Nygaard Sørensen, who holds the serious title of risk manager in the developer’s company.

– There are always risks in a large and long-term construction project. It could, for example, be the supply of materials, authority relations or technical challenges that can challenge the project in terms of time and finances, says Bo Nygaard Sørensen in a written reply to FemernReport.

Risk register
The purpose of the risk committee is to have a forum where, across the entire project, the focus is on management processes in relation to risks, concrete risk management and the current risk picture for the Fehmarn project. In relation to the latter, Femern A/S has a regular risk register that can be looked up. Everything is continuously checked against Femern A/S’s financial reserve.

Risk top-25
When the risk committee meets, a report is submitted on the top 25 risks within finance and schedule, the risk management process, the current risk picture divided by areas and contracts, as well as the overall status of the risk register and the reserve. In addition, there are reports on a number of recurring topics. Here, a year wheel is consulted on, for example, EU status.

The risk management function monitors the daily work with the identified risks and changes in the risk picture and the financial reserve. Risk management takes place across the entire project. This means both in Femern A/S’ own organization and in relation to the contractors.

Don’t want to elaborate
FemernReport has asked Femern A/S what concrete risks and scenarios they are working on, but the company did not want to answer that. Presumably not to give good ideas to forces that for one reason or another do not like the project.

– Femern A/S works systematically to map and monitor all known risks in the project in close cooperation with the contractor consortia and our advisers, says Bo Nygaard Sørensen, in an e-mail to FemernReport.
