Sweden will accelerate a central railway expansion in Skåne ahead of the opening of the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel.

This is reported by News Øresund.

The Swedish government is now doubling the Swedish Transport Administration's proposed budget for the expansion of the Southern Main Line between Lund and Hässleholm. The section is to be expanded from two to four tracks, and the budget is increased from 3.3 to 6.6 billion Swedish kronor.

According to News Øresund, the announcement was made on Sunday by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson at a press conference at Luftkastellet in Malmö with a view of the Öresund Bridge.

The background is, among other things, the need for more railway capacity in southern Sweden when the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel opens.

It is still unclear how much faster the expansion can be completed. So far, the message has been that the four tracks can be completed at the earliest in 2046, but the Swedish government wants the process expedited.

The initiative is part of the work on Sweden's new national plan for transport infrastructure, which covers the period 2026 to 2037 and includes a total of 1,171 billion Swedish kronor.
