Ostholstein is beginning to fully realize the potential of the fixed Fehmarn Belt connection, which is expected not only to strengthen infrastructure but also to attract investments and foster growth in the region, according to Lübecker Nachrichten. Both businesses and local experts point to the tunnel’s positive effects, which are now becoming more visible.
– A traffic hub for investments
Sandra Belka, spokesperson for the development agency Egoh, describes the tunnel as a gamechanger:
– The fixed Fehmarn Belt connection makes Ostholstein far more attractive as a traffic hub for investments, she says. Belka highlights the region’s growing appeal to companies looking to establish themselves near the future link.
German service sector’s competitive edge
Astrid Bednarski, chairwoman of the HanseBelt business association, also sees significant opportunities, particularly in the service sector:
– Labor is much more expensive in Denmark than in Germany. Many Danes will continue to cross the border to have their cars repaired, their teeth fixed, or to use other skilled services, she says, adding that the tunnel toll will not deter this trend.
Major logistics projects underway
A concrete example of the economic impact is the tire company Delticom, which has moved its operations from Sweden to Ostholstein. The company has rented two large logistics halls in the Hansebelt Business Park near the A1 motorway. Steven Engler, CEO of E-Gruppe, which developed the logistics center, calls it a model for future projects:
It’s working fantastically. We’re fully rented out, and once the tunnel is complete, the property’s value will increase significantly, he tells Lübecker Nachrichten.
Green projects on the horizon
Sustainable solutions are also finding their way into the region. Volker Friederichsen, a local entrepreneur, is planning a hydrogen refueling station and production facility spanning 4,000 square meters.
– It’s a complex project but an essential part of the region’s future, he says.
Opportunities on both sides of the Belt
With the Fehmarn connection, Ostholstein is beginning to reap the same growth opportunities that have long been highlighted on the Danish side. The combination of logistics, services, and green technology could pave the way for an economic boom on both sides of the tunnel.
