Total road traffic over the Øresund Bridge rose by three percent in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. On average, 19,136 passengers crossed the fixed link over the Øresund each day. This increase is also reflected in a rise in road revenue, which reached 784 million DKK, 21 million DKK more than the previous year, according to a press release from Øresundsbron.
Decrease in truck traffic
While commuting is on the rise, the report also shows a decline in truck traffic. In the first half of the year, there was an average of 1,619 truck crossings per day, a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to the same period last year. However, freight traffic stabilized during the second quarter and is now close to last year’s levels.
More vehicles run on electricity or hydrogen
Another noteworthy development is the increase in so-called “green crossings,” meaning vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen. The share of these crossings rose from 8.4 percent in June 2023 to 12.2 percent in June 2024, an increase of about 45 percent in a year.
Øresundsbro Konsortiet’s financial results show an improvement with a profit before value adjustments of 701 million DKK, 54 million DKK more than in the same period last year. The consortium’s interest expenses fell from 136 million DKK to 97 million DKK, mainly due to declining inflation and reduced debt.
Visiting Sweden is attractive
Leisure traffic has also seen an increase, particularly among Danish travelers, which is partly attributed to the weakened Swedish krona, making it attractive for Danes to visit Sweden. Despite already record-high leisure traffic last year, this segment grew by an additional 4 percent in the first half of 2024.
Overall, Øresundsbro Konsortiet expects an annual profit before value adjustments of between 1,400 and 1,500 million DKK, which is in line with last year’s results. This indicates stable development despite minor fluctuations in specific traffic segments.
