Large data centre could be built on Lolland

A new, large data centre may be on its way to southern Lolland. The municipality has received an enquiry from an operator and is now beginning to process the application.

A large data centre of around 114 hectares, equivalent to almost 160 football pitches, and expected to create between 390 and 450 new jobs, may be on its way to the Rødby area.

At their next meeting on Monday, politicians on Lolland Municipality's climate, technical and environment committee will decide whether to initiate an idea phase for a possible construction of the data centre.

So nothing has been decided yet, but the municipality has, through a Danish developer, received an enquiry from an unspecified actor that wants to build on an area by Ottelundevej and south of Lundegårdsvej near Rødby.

The idea is that the data centre will be located in these two areas marked in red. Graphic: Lolland Municipality

Two sub-areas

As mentioned, the site covers approximately 114 hectares divided into two sub-areas, respectively north and south of the Danish Nature Agency's land at Næsbækken.

In addition, the area is bordered by the railway to the south-west and the coming new motorway to the south-east, according to the case presentation.

According to the municipality, this is an area that meets the requirements for power supply and sufficient size. The site is currently in a rural zone.

The chairman of the climate, technical and environment committee, Henrik Jacobsen (C), does not know who the actor that contacted the municipality is, but he welcomes the interest.

- Pleased that someone has their eyes on us

- I hope and expect that they are serious people, and that what they are proposing is also what it will become. I am pleased that someone has their eyes on us, and we would very much like something to happen. It could be good for Lolland to gain those jobs, and we will of course do everything we can to ensure that the employees also settle here, he says.

- It is also close to our other business area, so it would fit in really well, he adds.

For now, however, the project is only in its very early stages. Initially, as mentioned, the politicians must decide whether to launch an idea proposal with a view to also holding a public meeting before proceeding with the plans.
