The main contractor Fehmarn Link Contractors (FLC), which is responsible for casting the tunnel elements and building the Fehmarn link, must train 470 apprentice man-years over the course of the project. This is the ambitious objective.
According to student coordinator at FLC, Jane Petersen, FLC currently employs 50 apprentices.
In order to get apprentices from the programs that few young people apply for, FLC has reached out to the FGU schools to get a collaboration up and running.
– We have known from day one that, for example, building constructors and warehouse operators are difficult to find. That’s why we’ve thought about the FGU schools, as we need some young people who come with some energy and a desire for physical work, says Jane Petersen.
The path to an apprenticeship is short
FLC therefore has regular meetings with supervisors from the three local FGU schools in Maribo, Nakskov and Nykøbing, just as FGU students are invited to visit FLC to hear more about the possibilities.
– It is a good way to recruit from, because there are a lot of good young people at the FGU schools who may not be clear about what they want, and then we come up with some options where the path to an apprenticeship is short, if there is a good match between student and manager, explains Jane Petersen.
Practical learning
At the FGU schools, they are also happy about the collaboration with FLC, so that the FGU students can get an apprenticeship.
– The hands-on learning at FGU usually strengthens the students’ opportunities to progress, and it is positive that FLC is interested in helping to lift some of the students in our target group further in an ordinary education course. We are delighted that there is a prestigious project like the Fehmarn construction site, which wants to contribute to it, says Anders Madsen, FGU teacher at FGU in Nykøbing.
Has replaced the production schools
Forberedende Grunduddannelse (Preparatory Basic Education), FGU. is a form of school that started in August 2019 and has replaced the previous production schools.
The FGU institutions are state-owned educational institutions. There are 27 FGU institutions with 88 FGU schools spread across Denmark.
