Fehmarn job-fest on Lolland-Falster and South Zealand

Published

Employment within the construction industry is skyrocketing in Lolland-Falster and South Zealand. A new report from STAR (The Labor Market and Recruitment Board) shows that employment in construction and construction has increased by a total of 2,895 full-time employees in the entire Zealand Region since the first quarter of 2020.

94 percent of the jobs go to nearby municipalities
What is most remarkable is that a whopping 94 percent of the new jobs have landed with citizens in the five municipalities that are closest to the Femernbyggeriet – Lolland, Guldborgsund, Vordingborg, Næstved and Faxe municipalities. To be precise, employment in the construction sector in the five neighboring municipalities has increased by 2,712 full-time employees.

In June 2020, funds were allocated to establish a recruitment secretariat in connection with Fehmarnbyggeriet. It was realized in the Femern Agency. One of the tasks for the Femern Agency is continuous monitoring of recruitment and training needs in connection with construction.

Secure labor for the Fehmarn project
Two employees from STAR’s labor market office East have been sitting with their heads deep in the numbers since January. Part to provide evidence in relation to the Fehmarn project’s importance for employment, but not least to ensure that the Fehmarn project can get the workforce that is needed:

– We have found the most important figures related to the construction of the Fehmarn Belt. The report has been created to help companies and job centers when they have to plan and coordinate how they can best upgrade and recruit employees, says Jonas Ring Madsen from STAR Labor Market Office East, in a post on LinkedIn.

250 new apprenticeships
The report also shows that progress is being made with the apprenticeship initiative. There have been 250 new apprenticeships in the construction trades in the five neighboring municipalities since 2020.

There has also been a strong growth in the number of foreign employees in the construction industry in Lolland-Falster and South Zealand. Since 2020, more than 2,300 more foreign employees have been added.

Calculated by industry – not employer
It is important to note that the figures from STAR only tell about the number of people employed within the industry. It is therefore not clear from the statistics which employer the many new employees work for. But the strong growth coincides with the start-up of the Femernbyggeriet and the construction of the new Storstrømsbro in 2021 and 2020 respectively.

STAR has not made up the figures for the individual municipalities either, but considers the five neighboring municipalities – Lolland, Guldborgsund, Vordingborg, Næstved and Faxe – as a common quantity.
