Surprisingly great interest in the construction

Lolland is home to Europe’s biggest construction site right now. And it has not gone unnoticed. The interest from citizens and tourists to take a look at the largest construction project in Danish history is increasing.

Surprised and humbled
– We are pleasantly surprised by the great interest and also a little humbled that so many think what we do is interesting and want to visit our exhibition centre, says Morten Kramer Nielsen, head of communications, Femern A/S.

Since the visitor centre at Havnegade 2 in Rødbyhavn opened at the end of April last year, after the corona restrictions ended, there have been approximately 60,000 visitors, of which 37,000 this year so far.

– We have some guides who talk about the project in the visitor centre and we have just made a new job posting for some hourly paid guides because we need more hands. So it’s time to go, says Morten Kramer Nielsen.

Insight into the project
Of course, the fact that Lolland’s new tourist attraction is a construction site where safety must be taken into account and that the work can be carried out imposes some limitations.

– We created the exhibition centre because we cannot have tourists on the construction site for safety reasons, so we made a lot out of the exhibition. It must give a good insight into the project and what is happening. The exhibition is always current, so we also change the exhibition’s content on an ongoing basis, explains Morten Kramer Nielsen.

In addition, there are also live cameras to give guests a sense of the construction site.

Coming from far away
At Visit Lolland-Falster, which organizes inspiration and press trips to the visitor centre and viewing platform, there is also great interest in getting close to the Fehmarn project.

– There is huge interest. It is pensioner associations, companies and generally everyone who wants to come down here on a group trip. They come from far away. We have Jutland bus companies that drive down here and experience the taste of Lolland-Falster, which includes a visit to Rødbyhavn, says Lindy Kjøller.

Viewing platform changes
At the viewing platform at the end of Gamle Badevej, guests are not counted, but the feeling is that it is used extensively.

– We had a few counts in the winter, where we could see that many people came, even more than in the exhibition. It is both locals and tourists who stop by, says Morten Kramer Nielsen.

Greater insight into the future
There are plans to expand the viewing platform so you can get a better overview of the construction site.

– We agree with those who report back to us that the viewing platform we have now does not quite meet the goals. You can make something that is better so that you can get a greater insight into the project. We are working on that, but we are not ready to say exactly what it will be yet, says Morten Kramer Nielsen.

However, according to the communications manager, there should be some visible changes during the next year.
